Terms of Service
These terms cover subscribing to and using the currently available Facelet app for Mac. By subscribing, creating an account, or installing the app, you agree to them. We have kept them plain; if anything is unclear, ask us.
A native Windows version is coming soon. Windows downloads are not open yet; its requirements and applicable terms will be published before release. See Windows availability.
The short version
- A subscription gives you a personal license to Facelet, with every character and every update while you are subscribed. A business may also run it at its own premises.
- It costs $4.99 a month during the open beta and $9.99 a month after. Subscribe during the open beta and $4.99 a month stays your price for as long as you stay subscribed.
- It renews every month until you cancel. Cancel any time and keep Facelet to the end of the month you paid for.
- Not happy? Write to us within 30 days of your first payment and we refund it in full.
- You always have at least 10 characters. Who they are and how they look can change with updates.
- You need your own ChatGPT subscription and an Apple silicon Mac. Facelet is not affiliated with OpenAI.
- The open beta is beta software: expect rough edges, and tell us about them.
- You must be 18 or older to use Facelet; see section 8a.
1. Who we are
Facelet (“Facelet”, “we”, “us”) operates facelet.app and makes the Facelet app for Mac. Contact us through the contact page.
2. The open beta, your price and early beta seats
Facelet is sold as a monthly subscription. During the open beta it is $4.99 a month; the standard price after the beta is $9.99 a month. If you subscribe during the open beta, $4.99 a month stays your price for as long as your subscription continues without ending. If it ends, whether you cancel it or it lapses and is not paid, and you subscribe again later, the price in effect that day applies. The open-beta rate stays unchanged while you remain subscribed. For other subscriptions, we will email you at least 30 days before any price change takes effect, and you can cancel before then.
Before Facelet became a subscription we sold early beta seats as a single payment. A seat stays active for the life of Facelet version 1, with every version 1 update, and is never charged again. A seat is not a subscription and does not renew.
3. Your license
A subscription gives you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use Facelet on Macs that you own or control, for your own use, for as long as your subscription is active. You may activate it on up to three Macs at a time. The license includes every update released while you are subscribed. Compatibility with future operating systems and third-party services is not guaranteed. A seat’s license is the same, for Facelet version 1, with no end date.
If you subscribe for a business, the business may also run it on a Mac it owns or controls at its own premises, for example as a greeter on a reception display that visitors talk to. Each such Mac counts toward your three activations. You are responsible for telling visitors that their voice is processed by OpenAI through the ChatGPT account signed in on that Mac, and for following the laws on recording and notice that apply where you are. You may not offer Facelet, or access to it, as a service to other businesses.
You may not copy, sell, rent, sublicense, or share the app or your license; reverse engineer or decompile it except where the law allows; remove notices; or use the characters, portraits, voices, or other Facelet assets outside the app or to train a model.
4. The characters
Facelet comes with a collection of human characters, ten at the time of writing, and every license includes at least 10. The collection is a living part of the app. As Facelet improves we may change any character’s appearance, including face, hair, skin, body, wardrobe, accessories, styling, animation and voice pairing; rename a character; and add, replace or retire characters. If we retire one we replace it, so the collection never has fewer than 10. The portraits and previews on this site, in the app and in our emails show the characters as they are today; they are not a promise that any particular character or look will stay the same. Changes of this kind are part of the service, do not reduce your license, and do not by themselves entitle you to a refund beyond the 30-day money-back guarantee in section 6; you can cancel at any time.
5. What you need
The current Mac release requires Apple silicon, M1 or newer, running macOS 15 or newer, with 16 GB of memory recommended, about 3 GB of free disk space to install, and 0.2 to 0.7 GB for each extra character (keep 0.5 GB spare while one downloads). This Mac release does not run on Intel Macs, iPhone, iPad, or Windows. Requirements may be refined as we test more Macs. You also need an active ChatGPT subscription from OpenAI that supports voice conversation; Facelet uses it through your own account and does not include it. ChatGPT and OpenAI are trademarks of OpenAI; Facelet is an independent product and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or supported by OpenAI. OpenAI’s terms and usage limits apply to your conversations, and changes OpenAI makes may affect Facelet.
6. Payment, renewal, canceling and the 30-day money-back guarantee
Prices are in US dollars. Payments are processed by Stripe. Your subscription starts when your first payment succeeds and renews automatically every month, on your billing date, charging the payment method you gave us until you cancel. Taxes may be added at checkout where required.
You can cancel at any time from your account page, which opens Stripe’s billing page. Canceling stops future charges, and you keep Facelet until the end of the month you have already paid for. We do not refund the unused part of a month after the first 30 days.
If a payment fails, we email you and show a link to pay. Facelet keeps working for 3 days after the first failed payment while you fix it. If it is still unpaid after that, Facelet pauses until the latest open invoice is paid. After Stripe stops retrying, the subscription stays on hold without further automatic payment attempts. Paying the latest open invoice restores it. If you cancel the subscription, it ends and you can subscribe again.
If Facelet is not for you, write to us within 30 days of your first payment and we will refund that payment in full, no questions asked. Refunds go back to the original payment method and end the subscription. We may decline repeat refunds from the same person for the same product.
6a. The free trial
You may try Facelet free for 30 days on one Mac. The trial starts when the app first opens with your trial link, includes the full app and every character, needs no card and is never charged, and ends on its own: the app returns to the welcome screen and stops working until you subscribe. We allow one trial per Mac and one per email address, and we may refuse or end a trial that circumvents this. We may later ask for a payment method to start a trial; trials already under way are not affected, and we will say so before you start one. Subscribing during or after the trial turns it into a normal subscription with no interruption. The 30-day money-back guarantee applies to your first payment, not to the trial.
7. Beta software
The open beta is pre-release software. It may contain defects, change substantially, or occasionally not work. We provide it so you can use it early and help us improve it. Please report problems to us; we may use what you tell us to improve Facelet without owing you anything for it.
8. Your account
Your account is tied to your email address and secured with single-use sign-in links. Keep access to that mailbox safe; anyone who can read it can sign in as you. Tell us if you believe your account has been misused.
8a. Who can use Facelet
You must be 18 or older to create an account, start a trial, subscribe or use Facelet, and you confirm that you are when you sign up. Facelet’s characters are AI companions, and AI companions may not be suitable for some minors.
If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we close it: its licenses stop working, and we cancel any subscription on it with a refund. If we learn that the person is under 13, we also delete their account data, keeping only counts that identify no one; copies in our backups and server logs expire within 35 and 90 days, and payment records that tax law requires us or Stripe to keep remain. If you believe a child is using Facelet, tell us through the contact page. Our safety page explains how Facelet tells you it is an AI and what it does if you mention suicide or self-harm.
9. Acceptable use
Use Facelet lawfully and decently. Do not use it to impersonate real people, to harass, or to produce content that is unlawful where you are. Do not interfere with our services or other people’s use of them.
10. Ownership
Facelet, its characters, artwork, names, and software are ours or our licensors’ and are protected by intellectual property law. Your conversations are yours; we do not claim them, and we do not receive them.
11. Disclaimers and limits
Facelet, and especially the beta, is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, and we do not promise that the app will be uninterrupted or error-free. Our total liability to you for anything arising from these terms or from Facelet is limited to the amount you paid us. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages. Some places do not allow these limits, in which case they apply to the extent permitted.
12. Ending things
You may stop using Facelet at any time. We may suspend or end your license if you materially breach these terms and do not fix it after we ask, or as described in section 6 if a payment is not made. Sections that by their nature should survive, including ownership, disclaimers, and limits, survive.
13. Changes
We may update these terms as Facelet grows. We will post the new version here with a new date and, for significant changes, email account holders. Continuing to use Facelet after that means you accept the new terms.
14. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state where Facelet is established, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Before bringing a claim, please write to us; most problems can be sorted out by email. Nothing here limits consumer rights that the law gives you and that cannot be waived.
