ChatGPT Voice on the Mac: what it does, and how to put a face on it
ChatGPT Voice arrived in the Mac desktop app in July 2026. What it can do, which plans include it, and how Facelet turns that voice into a face you can talk to.
What arrived in July 2026
On July 23, 2026, OpenAI brought ChatGPT Voice to its Mac and Windows desktop app. It is powered by GPT-Live, so it can listen and speak at the same time, and on the desktop it can also direct agents and, on the Mac, glance at the window you have in front so it knows what you are working on. Voice on the desktop is included with paid plans: Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise.
It is good. It is also faceless. You talk to a shape.
The voices
ChatGPT ships a small cast of voices you can choose from, with names like Juniper, Maple, Vale, Sol, Breeze, Arbor, Spruce, Ember and Cove. Each has a character of its own. Facelet lets you pair any of them with any face, and remembers the pairing for each character.
Putting a face on it
Facelet is a separate Mac app that signs in with your ChatGPT account and opens its own voice conversation, then renders a lifelike human character that listens and speaks in time with that voice. It does not need the ChatGPT app to be open, and it does not need an API key. Your plan’s voice allowance applies exactly as it would in the ChatGPT app.
Because it is a separate conversation, Facelet starts fresh: it does not import the chat you were having in the ChatGPT app, and it never reads your history. Think of it as walking into another room to talk to the same person, face to face.
A few practical notes
- Facelet asks for microphone permission the first time, like any voice app on macOS.
- If your Mac’s speakers feed your microphone in a small room, headphones make the conversation cleaner.
- Facelet needs an Apple silicon Mac, M2 or newer, and macOS 14 or newer; the face is rendered on the graphics chip in real time.
- The subscription connection has been tested with ChatGPT Pro; other plans are being validated.
If you already talk to ChatGPT on your Mac every day, Facelet is the difference between a voice and a person. Early seats are $24.99, once.
