Can you video call ChatGPT? Camera, screen and a face
What “video calling” ChatGPT means in October 2026: ChatGPT seeing your camera or screen in its phone apps, OpenAI’s desktop Pets, and how to give the conversation a face you can look at.
Mac and Windows: Facelet is built natively for both. The Mac app is available now; the Windows PC version is coming soon, after signing and release testing. See Windows requirements and release status.
People mean two different things by “video calling ChatGPT”. One is ChatGPT seeing you: your camera or your screen. The other is you seeing it: a face to talk to. As of October 2026, OpenAI offers the first on phones and not the second anywhere.
ChatGPT can see your camera, on your phone
In the ChatGPT apps for iPhone and Android, voice conversations can include live video from your camera or a share of your screen, so you can point at something and ask about it. According to OpenAI’s voice help article, this works in the Advanced voice mode on paid plans (Go, Plus and Pro); the newer Live mode, powered by GPT-Live, “does not support video or screen sharing” yet. OpenAI lists live video and screen sharing for its mobile apps, not its desktop app.
Does ChatGPT have a face?
No. GPT-Live is a voice, and ChatGPT shows no face of its own during a call. The closest thing in OpenAI’s apps is Pets: optional animated companions in the ChatGPT desktop app that float above your windows, show the status of work in progress, and let you start a chat by typing or speaking. They are small cartoon sprites, not a person looking back at you.

| What it costs | Included in Go, Plus and Pro | Part of the desktop app | Free for 30 days, then $4.99 a month in the open beta, plus a paid ChatGPT plan |
A face to talk to on your Mac
If what you want is the other half of a video call, someone looking back at you, that is what Facelet adds. It renders a lifelike 3D character on your Mac that listens while you speak, glances away while ChatGPT thinks, and answers out loud in a ChatGPT voice with its face moving as it talks. It uses your own ChatGPT account with no API key, never turns on your camera, and has no per-minute fee because the face is drawn by your own computer. Keep it in a corner of your screen with Float while you work.
It is not a video call in the strict sense: nobody sees you, and the character can’t see what you are holding up. For that, use ChatGPT’s video mode on your phone.
What about “AI video call” apps?
Search for an AI video call app and most results are character apps built around flirting or romance. Facelet isn’t one of those: its characters are for conversation, practice and company while you work, and they are labeled as AI. See what a realistic AI companion should and shouldn’t be.
Facelet’s Mac app is available now for Apple silicon Macs with macOS 15 or newer. A native Windows app is coming soon; see the Windows release status.
