A realistic AI companion, for conversation, not romance
What makes an AI companion feel real on a computer screen, what Facelet’s ten characters are and aren’t, and how to choose one if you want company and conversation rather than a dating app.
Mac and Windows: Facelet is built natively for both. The Mac app is available now; the Windows PC version is coming soon, after signing and release testing. See Windows requirements and release status.
Most apps sold as a “realistic AI companion” are text chats with a photo, or flirty video-call apps. If what you want is company and conversation, the kind of presence you’d have from a colleague at the next desk, the questions to ask are different.
What “realistic” means on a screen
A face feels real when it behaves like it is paying attention. The eyes look at you while you speak and drift while it thinks. It blinks and breathes between sentences. The mouth, jaw and brows move with the words, not just open and shut. Skin, hair and eyes catch the light as the head moves. Facelet renders each of these live on your computer, frame by frame, while the conversation happens. The guide to what makes an AI avatar feel real goes deeper, including what to expect from lip sync.
Company and conversation, not a dating app
Facelet is built for talking things through, practicing out loud and keeping someone in the corner while you work. It is not a dating or romance app. The character is labeled as AI in the app, the replies come from ChatGPT under OpenAI’s rules, and Facelet is for adults. Facelet watches the replies for the name of a crisis line, such as 988, and shows crisis resources when one appears; read how Facelet handles safety.
Ten people, each with a voice
The first collection has ten lifelike human characters, eight women and two men, each with their own resting expression. Pair any of them with an available ChatGPT voice; Facelet remembers the voice you chose for each face. Switch characters whenever you like.
What it remembers
Each Facelet conversation is a fresh voice conversation on your ChatGPT account. Facelet doesn’t import your ChatGPT chats or keep a relationship history of its own. That keeps expectations honest: it is a good listener in the moment, not a friend who has known you for years.
How to choose a realistic AI companion
- Can you talk out loud? Typing at a photo isn’t a conversation. Look for spoken replies you can interrupt.
- Is the face live or a clip? A face rendered in real time reacts while you talk; a generated video plays back the same way every time.
- Who pays for the minutes? Services that stream a face from their servers often charge by the minute. Facelet renders on your computer, so there is no per-minute fee.
- Does it use your camera? Facelet never does.
- Is it honest that it’s AI? It should say so, and it should point you to real help when a conversation calls for it.
Try one
Facelet runs on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 15 or newer and needs a compatible paid ChatGPT account. Start with an AI you can talk to, or keep it in the corner as a desktop AI companion. A native Windows app is coming soon; see the Windows release status.
