How to talk to ChatGPT like a person, out loud
Practical ways to make a ChatGPT conversation feel like talking to someone: use your voice, tell it how to talk to you, keep turns short and interrupt, and, if you like, give it a face.
Mac and Windows: Facelet is built natively for both. The Mac app is available now; the Windows PC version is coming soon, after signing and release testing. See Windows requirements and release status.
ChatGPT answers like a reference book unless you ask it not to. Making it feel like a conversation is less about clever prompts than about how you talk to it.
1. Use your voice
Speaking changes the conversation more than any prompt. You say more, you correct yourself, you think out loud. ChatGPT’s own apps have a voice mode; OpenAI’s voice page lists which apps and plans include it and the limits that apply. Use headphones if you want to talk over a reply without it hearing itself.
2. Tell it how to talk to you
ChatGPT’s settings let you describe how it should respond to you. A few lines that make it feel less like a search engine:
- “Keep answers to two or three sentences unless I ask for more.”
- “Ask me one question at a time, and wait for my answer.”
- “Talk like a friend who knows the subject, not like a manual.”
- “If I’m vague, ask what I mean instead of guessing.”
You can also say these at the start of a conversation: “For the next twenty minutes, be my study partner. Quiz me on chapter four.”
3. Keep turns short, and interrupt
People don’t deliver speeches to each other. Say one thing, let it answer, push back. If a reply runs long, cut in: “Wait, go back to the second point.” Short turns keep the conversation yours.
4. Give it something to do
Conversations feel natural when they have a purpose. Rehearse a job interview, practice a language, explain a topic until you understand it, or talk through a plan before you start. The use cases have scripts for each.
Is it weird to talk to ChatGPT like a person?
No. Talking out loud is how most people think best, and ChatGPT is good at listening and asking questions. Just keep in mind what it is: an AI that can be confidently wrong, with no memory of you beyond what your account keeps. Check facts that matter, and talk to real people about the things that need them.
5. Give it a face
The last thing missing from a voice conversation is someone to look at. Facelet gives your ChatGPT a lifelike 3D face on your Mac: the character looks at you while you speak, glances away while it thinks, and its face moves with every reply. It uses your own ChatGPT account, with no API key, and because the face is rendered on your computer there is no per-minute fee. Facelet’s conversation is separate from the ChatGPT app and doesn’t import your chats. It needs an Apple silicon Mac and a compatible paid ChatGPT plan; a native Windows app is coming soon (see Windows release status).
