A private AI companion: what stays on your Mac

Where your voice goes, where the face is rendered, and what a companion app should never see. How Facelet is built to keep your conversation between you and ChatGPT.

A companion you talk to out loud hears everything. Before you let one into your day, it is worth knowing where your voice goes, who holds the conversation, and what the app itself can see. Here are the questions to ask any companion app, and Facelet’s answers.

Where does my voice go?

With Facelet, your voice goes to OpenAI, because you are talking to ChatGPT through your own account, under OpenAI’s privacy policy and terms. It does not go to Facelet. Facelet does not proxy, record, transcribe or store your conversation.

Who holds the conversation?

You and OpenAI. Facelet opens a fresh voice conversation on your account each time. It does not read your ChatGPT chat history or memories, and it cannot: it never asks for them.

What does the app itself see?

Facelet listens to the voice it is playing back in order to move the character’s mouth and face. That analysis happens on your Mac and is not uploaded anywhere. The face is rendered on your Mac too, which is why Facelet needs Apple silicon rather than a streaming service.

What about my password?

Facelet signs you in through OpenAI’s own login flow and does not store your ChatGPT password. Signing out of Facelet ends its access.

What does Facelet, the company, know about me?

Your email address, your purchase, and the Mac you activated on. That is what it takes to sell you a seat and give you a license. The website sets a single cookie, only after you sign in, and runs no advertising or analytics trackers. The full list is in the privacy policy, written to be read.

Can I delete it?

Yes. Email hello@facelet.app from the address on your account and we will delete your data, apart from purchase records we are required to keep for tax and accounting. Deleting the app from your Mac removes the character and the license file.

Private does not mean secretive. It means the conversation belongs to the two people having it, and the app in the middle stays out of it.
